USB Device Over Current Status Detected

This error which usually presents itself after POST when you start your computer.
It indicates that there's some form of electrical malfunction.

I'm going to list most of the reasons you get this error:

Damaged front-panel
Alot of times there's some kind of damage going on with your front-panel USB port or wire going to the motherboard. The damage may not be obvious to spot, but first try to disconnect your front-panel usb from your motherboard and see if the error goes away.

The picture to the left is an example of a damaged usb port. You can see the pins are skewed in the wrong direction.

Grounding issues
Your USB ports are somehow getting short-circuited.
To identify if this is the cause of your errors, simply remove your motherboard from your case and place it on a non-conductive surface (like wood) and try to start it from there.

Causes:
  1. Screws used to mount the motherboard are too tight
  2. Rogue mounting bolts attached to your case are touching the underside of your motherboard
  3. Some kind of conductive material is under or on your motherboard causing short-circuits
  4. Wrong installation of front-panel cables
USB power jumper
Some motherboards have certain jumpers that controls the voltage to your USB ports.
Check your manual and see if you have these jumpers in the right place.

Defective USB devices
Some USB devices (like a mouse, printer, keyboard etc) may be broken, and can cause problems.
Try removing all your USB devices and try one at a time so see if anyone is causing issues.

Defective motherboard
Sadly, somethings just dont work as they should because of production errors.
If you've tried everything else you may want to do an RMA.

  8. My CPU's cabinet is of steel and current is running through whole steel body. Is it due to this reason that my monitor is showing the above problem???
I have removed the front panel USB device wire from the motherboard but that didn't work.

  21. Same problem here but I checked all the usb's one at a time by disconnecting the usb plugs from the motherboard but problem remained. On the off chance I took out the CMOS battery and reset using the jumper then replaced the battery and hey presto problem fixed. don't understand how but thought I'd share it here.

  23. Yep, this worked for me. One of the front usb ports broke. One of our employees must have broken it because that was where a usb printer was plugged in. There are 4 front parts, I yanked one of the cables and two including the broken one are now disconnected. Now it works fine. I'm glad I didn't have to replace the power supply, I'm just going to return the one I bought just in case. Thanks.

  24. For those of you that have not solved this issue, replacing the CMOS battery that had died on my machine solved the problem, the date and time were wrong which gave me a clue as well. Try it. Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard.

  26. Nice. This post helped me quickly resolve my problem. Front panel USB fail. Thanks!

  27. my problem is that the error occurs when the wireless router is connected to the PC when it boots up. which means, it is not connected to a USB port anyway. If we disconnect the Cisco/Linksys router, the PC boots fine, but it generates the error when the router is connected and the pc is booted.

  31. Thank a Lot.
Tough this was not the way I solved my problem, What I did was unplugged the power cord from my system kept it out for a minute and re-plugged.

Turned on my system and it was working fine. Though un-plugging the USB cable from the motherboard was my first thought.

    Aj,

  34. I saw this messge for the first time last night and couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Then after reading several comments, I decided it must have something to do with the USB port for my new printer. I checked the port and it looks damaged, i.e. it is at a slightly skewed angle. So I disconnected the printer from my hard drive and was able to log in with no issue. I've retained the receipt and the printer is under warranty so I'll take it in and get an exchange.

  35. Yep, it was my front panel USB. That would have taken me a long time to track down. Thanks!
